The Belfry and North Gallery are free exhibition spaces available to local artists who are interested in engaging with and responding to the architecture, location and community within the grade-one listed church of St John on Bethnal Green.
They are typically offered for one month, with the opening evenings corresponding with the Whitechapel Gallery’s First Thursday programme. On those evenings the church is also available for artists to use as a performance space and St John’s licensed cash bar is open for refreshments.
Artists are free to choose opening times for their show but St John’s expects a minimum of 2 four-hour openings per week. Invigilation is the responsibility of the artists and while the show is open there have to be at least 2 invigilators at the church for security reasons.
We are accepting proposals for 2018 with the following opening/closing dates:
3 May to 31 May
Proposals should show an appreciation of the spaces, including a CV and images of work and/or previous exhibitions.
Once a proposal has been accepted St John’s will confirm dates in writing and, if an artist cancels within 6 months preceding the date, a cancellation fee of £150 will be charged.
If this sounds interesting to you than we are happy to arrange a meeting in the church to look at the spaces and talk about your ideas.
