Minihi, Rattle + Fatima Lahham
4 June 2022 at St John on Bethnal Green, midday to 2pm | advance tickets
Space In This Place: we find ourselves in a gathering of musicians and the instruments they surround themselves with, of all sizes and shapes. Through the movements of mallets and of breath, they chime, they chirp or sing revealing the influence of many centuries of music and history. Watch carefully as a thought becomes an action, an action become a sound and those sounds fly back to us transforming into sensations, emotions, and endorphins as they reach our ears.
Minihi is the creative outlet of percussionists and composers Zands and Louise Anna Duggan. Together, they create a uniquely percussive take on contemporary instrumental music by blending mallets, piano and bell-like textures with earthy drums and bubbling synths. Zands and Louise construct vivid soundscapes where the classical palette intersects with the world of groove and electronics. Their debut release “Tokaido” was released by Deutsche Grammophon as part of Project XII 2020 and their album ‘Recaptures’ was released in 2021 by Berlin label ‘Unperceived Records’. This year they composed the music for Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe. Preview – video
Rattle is an ongoing musical project concerned with experiments in rhythm, metre and tension. Katharine Eira Brown & Theresa Wrigley make up the Nottingham duo who with just drums and occasional vocalisations weave an expanse of percussive vortices. Their songs swirl and envelop with all the physicality and drama of another world pulling together around its own shifting centre of gravity. Rattle’s debut album was released in 2016 through Upset The Rhythm / I Own You and was greeted with much critical praise, this often singled out their hypnotic minimalism and ecstatic regard for the dance floor. Fatima Lahham, is an improvising recorder player. She has performed all over the UK and Europe, both as a soloist and with collaborators. Fatima’s music-making takes inspiration from medieval to contemporary music, Fairuz, birdsong, politics, and the idea of home. Her aim is to make music that tells stories about what is not being heard, that pushes at the boundaries of the imagination to create new worlds.
