St John’s is pleased to welcome back Joanna Vale and Renaud C. Haslan with their second exhibition in the Belfry.
This mixed media exhibition explores the theme of winter in a time of folklore and superstition. Situated in the candlelit and richly atmospheric setting of the belfry, it conjures the bleak yet beautiful landscape of winter, interspersed with images of myth and folk tales.
A re-imagining of this cold season through the minds of our ancestors, trying to make sense of their world gripped by the harshness of winter. The constant struggle for survival, aware of their own fragility and mortality. In the long, dark nights they would gather and tell stories around the hearthside – midwinter folktales fuelled by the imagined supernatural world around them.
Following the success of last year’s Tales from the Autumn House and curated by Joanna Vale, the project is brought to life by a collective of London artists inspired by this evocative season. It showcases new work through the media of painting, photography, drawings on wood and leather, textile art and graphic illustration, woven together with poetry inspired by Northern European folklore.
