‘Bell Culture’ by Ilia Rogatchevski, Opening 3 September, 7pm

From Tuesday 1 September until Thursday 1 October, London-based sound artist, Ilia Rogatchevski, will be conducting a month-long residency at St John on Bethnal Green.

To launch the project, Ilia will be giving an artist talk and tour of the church on Thursday 3 September as part of the Whitechapel Gallery First Thursday programme.

Doors/Cash Bar – 7pm
Artist Talk – 8pm

Inspired by Werner Herzog’s archeological investigations, as evident in films such as ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ (2010) and ‘Bells From the Deep’ (1993), the project will embrace the history of the church and the surrounding area, drawing sonorous information from various local sources and repurposing it.

The church will be open sporadically – on an open studio basis – throughout September as the project takes shape, culminating in a multimedia event on Thursday 1 Oct. Acts confirmed so far are Kentish ‘topographical sound art’ collective Hand of Stabs, London’s premier experimental wunderkind James Shearman and elusive ambient agents Mutual Extermination Club.
