How do you talk about silence without making a noise?
“When there is nothing to hear, you start hearing things” (Salomé Voegelin)
St John on Bethnal Green hums with the silences of reflection, lost confessions and unfinished business while standing at a hectic urban intersection. In Silent But, artists Frank Leuwer and Matthew Pagett use various parts of the church to consider the conundrum of silence.
The show features sculpture, sound, drawings and performance. All the work is made and displayed with the specifics of St John in mind: its history, layout and location.
Leuwer and Pagett are both recent Printmaking graduates of the Royal College of Art and have exhibited widely.
