Bitten by a Monkey and Alan Wilkinson, 10 July 2014, 8.00pm

ALAN WILKINSON (alto & baritone saxophones) will be presenting a solo performance in the unique acoustic of St John on Bethnal Green. Savage catharsis is guaranteed!

This is one in an ongoing series of concerts curated by London improvising group Bitten by a Monkey who will also be performing.

Alan Wilkinson has firmly established himself as a sacred monster of the British and international improvised music scenes. He trained as an artist before embarking in the mid-1970s on a career in music, gravitating quickly to the world of free improvisation. Alan went on to perform several times as part of Derek Bailey’s Company week events in the 1980s. It was towards the end of the 80s that he emerged as a heroic apostle of blistering noise, with the formation of the trio Hession/Wilkinson/Fell. This is a band which continues to be recognised as playing with an immolatory firepower previously unknown in British improvisation circles. The Wire described the band’s performance in these words: “more venom, more noise, more discord, more evil heat”. In recent years, Alan has increasingly turned to solo performance. This is a context in which audiences experience not only the overwhelming energy for which Alan is well known, but also a nuance and subtlety which in fact were always there.

Tickets at the door: £8.00, £5.00 concessions

St John’s cash bar will be open throughout the evening.
