Bitten by a Monkey and John Edwards, Thursday 12 June, 7.30pm

John Edwards, double-bassisst extraordinaire will be performing solo in the fine acoustic surroundings of St John Bethnal Green. This is the latest in a series of concerts curated by London improvising group Bitten by a Monkey, who will also be performing.

John Edwards is known as the go-to guy for any musical outfit seeking a mighty and propulsive lower frequency. Over the last thirty years he has built a Europe-wide reputation for committed and powerful playing that has dramatically extended the limits of bass technique. John first reached a wider audience in the late 1980s as one-third of Pointy Birds, a band still fondly remembered by audiences of improvised music. Since then John has played and recorded with notorious bands like B-Shops for the Poor, The Honkies, and GOD. In confirmation of his powerhouse status, he has become a regular player with veteran free players of an earlier generation such as Sunny Murray, Marshall Allen, Louis Moholo Moholo, and Britain’s own Evan Parker (with whom he frequently appears at London’s Vortex and elsewhere). John has also increasingly devoted time to solo performances. These are documented on his superb solo album “Volume”. Freely improvised music is still perceived in some dark corners as forbidding; John Edwards is a player whose dedicated spirit of communication firmly puts the lie to that old story.

St John’s licensed cash bar will be open throughout the evening.

Tickets at the door: £8.00, Concessions £5.00
