St John on Bethnal Green & Bitten by a Monkey present: Alex Ward

St John on Bethnal Green and fabled London-based improvised music group Bitten by a Monkey (Dylan Bates, violin; Roland Bates, piano; Steve Myers, recorders) present the first in a series of acoustic concerts, to be held on the second Thursday of each month, beginning on 13th February.
Each of these concerts is programmed to highlight a guest soloist, improvising in St John’s unique space. To open the series, the group is very pleased to share the bill with star clarinettist Alex Ward.
Alex first came to the attention of a wide audience at the age of fourteen, when he appeared as part of Derek Bailey’s 1988 Company Week. Since then he has been a stalwart of not just the improv, but also the avant-rock scene, recording and performing extensively with Bailey, Steve Noble, Thurston Moore, Pat Thomas and many others, as well as leading or co-leading ensembles such as Dead Days Beyond Help, Predicate, Forebrace, and Alex Ward & The Dead Ends.
Alex is a devastating clarinettist who “effortlessly straddles the divide between improvisation and composition” (allaboutjazz.com), displaying “breathtaking technique and inventiveness” (dustedmagazine.com) and “extraordinary clarinet pyrotechnics” (londonjazznews.com). This concert offers an opportunity to hear one of improvised music’s most youthful veterans in a solo setting.

Bitten by a Monkey have been developing an improvised band-sound together since 1997. Their performances incorporate elements of composition, folk music, ritual, and noise.
Future guest soloists in the series include guitarist John Russell (March), multi-instrumentalist Terry Day (April), and saxophonist Evan Parker (May).
Doors and St John’s cash bar will be open from 7pm with the performance starting at 7.30pm

Tickets at the door £8 / £4 concessions
