Belfry Exhibition: Miriam Sedacca – BERFREI, 4 – 14 August 2016

Berfrei Is a site-specific response to the unique space of the Belfry of St John on Bethnal Green. The exhibition draws upon the structural origins of the Belfry as a watch tower, from which its name is derived. Taking this association as a starting point, the exhibition considers the significance of spaces from which we look outwards, and of those which compel us to look inwards. BELFRY EXHIBITION: Gloria Sulli – Wandering

Wandering 3 March – 7 April 2016 Wandering is a site-specific sculptural installation project that takes its inspiration from plankton. Plankton, from the Greek πλαγκτόν, means ‘wanderer’. Unable to actively impact its own movement, it is transported passively by currents and waves. Plankton is the blue lung of the Earth, as it produces 50% of the oxygen on the planet through photosynthesis. The myriad of different organisms from which it is composed are among the most ancient from an evolutionary standpoint since life began in our oceans. These species differ significantly;...

Voices of the Winter Hearth, 5 November to 3 December

St John’s is pleased to welcome back Joanna Vale and Renaud C. Haslan with their second exhibition in the Belfry. This mixed media exhibition explores the theme of winter in a time of folklore and superstition. Situated in the candlelit and richly atmospheric setting of the belfry, it conjures the bleak yet beautiful landscape of winter, interspersed with images of myth and folk tales. A re-imagining of this cold season through the minds of our ancestors, trying to make sense of their world gripped by the harshness of winter. The constant struggle for survival, aware of their own...
