MEKONS, Sat 15 July, 7pm

“The Mekons are the most revolutionary group in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.” —Lester Bangs

Mekons begin their 40th anniversary tour with an acoustic show in the beautiful St John on Bethnal Green, designed by Sir John Soane.

Doors 7pm, onstage 8pm

Sonic adventurers, punk rock fundamentalists, exuberant Luddites, willing outcasts, the genre-defying Mekons formed in Leeds, England in 1977 and this year they celebrate their 40th anniversary. Born from the emerging British punk scene, they progressed from art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. This current classic line-up has remained intact since the mid-1980s. Theirs is an improbable history – a surprising and influential embrace of folk and country music with occasional forays into the art world. They have always worked collaboratively and collectively with all work credited to the band, never to individuals. Their mind-boggling output consistently blurs the lines between high art and low and has included exhibitions in the UK and US, a deranged pirate musical recorded and staged with Kathy Acker, an art performance with Vito Acconci, and several books including the unique art catalog/unfinished novel Mekons United. The mekons continue to make bold, unpredictable music while staying true to the punk ethos. Their mind-boggling output consistently blurs the lines between high art and low and they remain one of the truly great live bands.

Their latest work, existentialism, was released in 2016 as a book of art, writing and music with songs recorded in real time at Jalopy Theatre in Red Hook, Brooklyn and featuring a feral choir of Mekons’ show attendees. The CD existentialism will be released on Bloodshot Records in the summer of 2017. Mekons are subjects of the fantastic 2014 documentary Revenge of the Mekons.

The original 1977 mekon line-up (mekons mk1) will release a brand new record later this year and will play with mekons mk2 (1987- present day) at “mekonville”, the first ever mekons’ festival, to be held in the English countryside near Ipswich, in July 2017
