Stations of the Cross 2016

On Good Friday each year we walk with Jesus the Way of the Cross through a service in which we gather in front of each of the fourteen painting, hung around the church, to meditate on the unfolding events of Jesus’ trial and execution. These paintings – The Stations of The Cross, by Chris Gollon – have such depth and emotion about them that we have moved away from the traditional service, which is full of words, to standing and contemplating each one with a piece of music. This has become a mixture of recorded and live pieces, involving members of the church community,...

The cellist launches her new album ‘Five Incantations’ at St John’s. “I’m so thrilled to be presenting my new album ‘Five Incantations’ in London tonight. I’ll perform the new album in full, along with a few previous bits too, and there will be a chance to purchase copies of ‘Five Incantations’ ahead of its official worldwide release. BELFRY EXHIBITION: Gloria Sulli – Wandering

Wandering 3 March – 7 April 2016 Wandering is a site-specific sculptural installation project that takes its inspiration from plankton. Plankton, from the Greek πλαγκτόν, means ‘wanderer’. Plankton is the blue lung of the Earth, as it produces 50% of the oxygen on the planet through photosynthesis. The myriad of different organisms from which it is composed are among the most ancient from an evolutionary standpoint since life began in our oceans. These species differ significantly;...

Anna von Hausswolff + Kaitlin Aurelia Smith

Friday, 18 March, 7.30pm Anna von Hausswolff plays an intimate show for Convergence at St John on Bethnal Green. Anna von Hausswolff’s voice is that of an enchantress. Unearthly and wise beyond her years, she swoops from whispered incantations to ghastly shrieks, as though presiding over a black mass. Courageously ransacking a multitude of musical approaches, her latest outing, ‘The Miraculous’, is single-minded and radical, unflinching in its quest to reveal a world as ugly as it is beautiful. It’s a place everyone should explore, secure in the knowledge that the experience will...
