Support for East End churches from the East London Mosque

Posted by on Apr 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

My colleague, Dilowar Khan, the Director of the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre has sent this letter of support in the wake of the criticism from Amjal Masroor. It would be a great injustice not to recognise the significant Christian contribution to our communities. This is not just a historical legacy; in Tower Hamlets it’s alive today, setting an example to all. Christian Churches, groups and individuals are motivated by their faith to help the poor and needy; as Muslims, this is something we appreciate and applaud, recognising that belief in God – the Creator Who sustains...

Ajmal Masroor: East End churches have lost their way!

Posted by on Apr 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Ajmal Masroor is an Imam and a TV presenter. Having watched Rev. – the TV series about an East End vicar rather of the same theological persuasion as myself – he wrote an article for the Evening Standard in which he seems to think Rev. is a true picture of the churches here. We will not abandon the East End.” I wish they would abandon the East End – we would then be able to continue our work of building on all the many positive values of...

Why, in spite of the invitation, I won’t be at Baroness Thatcher’s Funeral

Posted by on Apr 10, 2013 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

As a parish priest in Bethnal Green I was asked to take the funeral of Reggie Kray when he died in 2000. In the week or so preceding the funeral the Press were very keen to know my views on the gangster – what was I going to say about him in the service? Was I going to take the line that he loved his mum and never hurt anyone who didn’t deserve it, or denounce him as a violent thug? My response was that a Christian funeral was not about choosing between competing public images; rather it was to place a human life in the context of the love of God, a love that is prepared to cherish...
